Microsoft needs to catch up with google big time and as part of that Microsoft announced today that it will be rolling out a number of enhancements for its Windows Live Hotmail service which are aimed at reducing junk and improving end user experience. Some of the new services that Microsoft plans to integrate are services such as Skydrive – a document repository and will also allow native viewing and editing of Microsoft Office documents from hotmail itself. This also would work in conjunction with Microsoft office 2010. A new feature called “Sweep” was also introduced which when activated by a user, removes all unwanted emails from a users inbox and also from the inboxes linked with Gmail and Yahoo. All these features do not require silverlight plugin however more complex documents do need the plugin. With about 350 million email accounts and with Gmail and Yahoo as its main competitors Hotmail aims at improving user experience and adding on more users.
